[3/2] Readings on Kylie Peppler and Nancy Baym

'New Opportunites for Interest-Driven Arts Learning in a Digital Age by Kylie Peppler
I first was very intrigued to know the term of interest-driven learning and its framework. (1. Seek to draw attention to the contributions that young people are making in the arts, accomplishments that could spur changes in industry, culture, and public policy.  2. Technology has the potential to open doors to young people who have historically been left behind in education. (pg.5) If the interest-driven learning works effectively, it will give access with greater flexibility for students to use their skills in order to learn something that they truly care about.

'Personal Connections in the Digital Age' by Nancy K. Baym
Nancy states that 'Digital media aren't saving us or ruining us. They aren't reinventing us. But they are changing the ways we relate to others and ourselves in countless, pervasive." (p.153). I often focus on the negative impact that technology has on our relationship. How we are no longer be able to have that sort of relationship we used to have before technology got introduced into our lives.

[3/1] Digital collage/fantastical landscape

Even though I have been around with this digital tools called photoshop and illustrators for a long time, I still feel like I don't know it enough. Because every time I try to create something, I always end up discovering a new way and method to accomplish it.Unlike the traditional way of painting, digital tools provide a significant advantage to be able to go back to the past and to present whenever I want. For that matter, I never seemed to satisfy since I can go back and retouch it anytime. Nevertheless, the fact that I have to do a simple sketch before jumping into digital artwork has not changed.

[2/3] On/Off Experiment - Part 2.

Creative Response :

[2/2] On/Off Experiment - Part 1.

For my On/Off experiment assignment, I decided to unplug myself from the internet. Since I have classes every day except on Friday, I figured that day would be the most ideal and suitable day to do the following assignment. The first thing I do when I am awake is to check the weather and social media on my phone. While I do that, I always finding myself trapped by SNS and end up spending too much unnecessary time browsing. Since I planned to prohibit myself from checking or doing things I usually do with the internet, I had to prepare myself a little bit the day before I decided to do my experiment. I downloaded my articles/journals for class readings, checked the weather and other things that require the access to the the the the the internet in advance.

Finally, my experiment began as soon as I woke up on that planned morning. Because I didn’t have access to any devices with the internet, I was able to get up right away from the bed which doesn't happen to me very often. With no access to the internet that grabs my attention yet, my mind automatically put myself into the zoned out mode and got forced to stay in peace. Though I ended up reading my course materials a little bit faster pace than usual, the time seemed to pass slower. To avoid the temptation to go online, I had to keep physically forcing myself not to be around devices with access.  I thought I was doing a pretty good job until I found myself looking up a direction on google map as I was leaving my place. Living without internet only lasted me about 3 hours.

[2/1] Favorite Quotes from eEtiquette

This rule resonates with me because sometimes when I am not in a normal mood,
I post something in public without enough thinking which ends up taking down.

I personally find this quote quite funny, and at the same time, it makes me think how vital our internet world has grown up. When we first got introduced to the whole called internet (I think I was around an elementary year), we didn't take that so seriously and end up creating a very personal and unique ID for emails. However, nowadays our email address became part of our identity which needs to take seriously.

This is something I always have in my mind. I don't think any other explanation would be needed for this specific quote. :)

[1/4] Reading (Douglas Rushkoff: Ch.1-2)

Douglas Rushkoff's writing sure helped me to organize my scattered thoughts on the natural biases digital technologies issues that been long and flow in my head quite a while.
With the advancement of digital technology, we tend to take many things for granted in our daily lives without realizing how heavily we rely on it.
And slowly the digital technologies have not only reshaped our cultural and economic landscape, but it also changes the whole aspect of human lives. The author talks about in chapter 1 and 2 about how the advancement of digital technologies led us to reinterpret the meaning of time and place. As he mentions, digital technologies have certain biases, and when used in correspondence to the biases these technologies improve our quality of life and free us from the obstacles we once faced; when used against these biases they might cause more harm and trap us.

[1/3] ARTLAB+ (Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden)

ARTLAB+ operates as an after-school digital art studio program for teens 13-19 years old and focuses on the STEAM education program, which combines cutting-edge technologies such as media, video, and 3D printers, with arts. 'ARTLAB+ Youth Productions' is a video production education program that involves various digital technologies such as cameras, online video sharing channels, and documentaries. While applying and practicing, the teens can learn the video production projects process. For about six weeks, field experts and artists train video technology such as camera operation, lighting, image synthesis, motion graphics, and image editing to the participants. The whole process would practice by project-based learning setting.
‘ARTLAB is a radically inclusive digital art studio for teens thirteen to nineteen years old. It opened in 2011 at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden to provide local youth free access to the latest technology, a wide range of art materials, and one-on-one mentorship from professional artists to support their creative learning. With a variety of special programs and resources, ARTLAB cultivates community and fosters the next generation of innovators.' (from https://hirshhorn.si.edu/explore/about-artlab/)

[1/2] Shrumen Lumen by FoldHaus Art Collective

Shrumen Lumen is a large-scale interactive kinetic installation by FoldHaus Art Collective, a project group of designers, engineers, and makers. The Giant mushroom origami-inspired sculpture itself was purely built up by a folding method with corrugated plastics. To make it work as an interactive sculpture that responds to human interaction, around 1560 LED lights in each mushroom sculpture were installed, and a network of Raspberry Pi(processor chip) was used to control both light and movement. With the help of the following network and programming by engineers, pressure pads which are part sculpture were created. When visitors step on the pad, it activates the mushrooms to change shape and colors.

[1/1] Educational background

Before joining TC to pursue Master degree in Art Education with Creative Technologies. I was a graphic designer at LG Electronics as an in-house branding designer. I specialized in print design with a particular interest in branding, editorial design, typography, and packaging. Over the summer, I took a course called 'Sculpture as Making' which briefly went over new media that's equipped in Thingspace. I was able to get a glimpse of it.
